Dealing With Common Eye Problems and Injuries

The best rule of thumb for when to see an eye specialist if you injure your eyes is "when in doubt, check it out!"

  • If you have a red eye, pain in an eye that doesn't go away within a short period of time, or at any time have had changes in your vision, then it's time to have your eyes checked.
  • If you get any small foreign objects in your eye, such as sand or sawdust or metal shavings, don't rub it. Flush your eye for several minutes with lukewarm water (it may be easiest to do this in the shower). If it still feels as though there is something in your eye, then be sure to see an eye specialist.
  • If you've been hit in the eye and it looks strange or appears to be bleeding, or if you have changes in or lose your vision, go to a hospital emergency department right away to be checked out.

One of the most common eye injuries for teens is a scratched cornea, which is often related to wearing contact lenses or playing sports. With a scratched cornea, it may feel like something is in your eye when there's really nothing there. Your eye may get red and irritated, produce lots of tears, and be overly sensitive to light.

If you think you have any kind of eye injury and you wear contact lenses, stop wearing your contacts until you see an eye specialist. Wearing contact lenses if you have an eye injury could damage your eyes more or cause an infection to develop. Don't worry — if your cornea is scratched, it usually will heal after a week or two of medicated eye drops and not wearing your contacts. You may hate wearing your old glasses, but it's just for a little while — and it beats permanently damaging your eyes!

Sun and Sunless Tanning Tips

Here are some tips and techniques for different skin tanning techniques.

SUNBATHING

The best advice for anyone who wishes to gain a skin tan by sunbathing is 'don't do it'. However, if you are determined to sunbathe, then keep the following tips in mind.
  • Read up on the dangers of skin cancer.
  • Learn about the effects of the sun rays on your skin. The sun's rays can increase the chance of premature ageing, speed up wrinkles, dry out your skin and become a trigger for certain skin disorders like eczema.
  • Have a number of short sunbathing sessions, instead of one long session.
  • Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
  • Wear sunglasses.
  • A sunscreen that provides minimal coverage is better than no sunscreen at all.
  • Avoid the sun during the hottest times of the day.

BRONZERS

Here are some tips for using bronzing products.
  • Exfoliate your skin first.
  • Do not apply a bronzer after a bath or shower.
  • Apply the bronzer in a circular motion.

SPRAY TANNING BOOTHS

Here are some tips for the use of tanning booths.
  • Exfoliate your skin first.
  • Moisturize your skin first.
  • Wear loose fitting clothing.
  • Wipe your skin with a towel after application.
  • Protect your eyes and mouth.

TANNING ACCELERATORS AND PILLS

There is no evidence to suggest that tanning accelerators or pills actually work. A lot of people are convinced the possible dangers far outweigh any benefits. Pills, particularly, are considered one of the worst ways in which to get a sun tan. Before taking any pills or accelerators, consider the following tips.
  • Consult your doctor on whether the products will have any negative effect on medication you are taking.
  • Find out any relevant information about the product you wish to take.
  • Ask for a recommendation. Do not choose the cheapest product, as it is may have no effect.
  • Be careful in the sun and protect your skin from UV rays.

TANNING LOTIONS

Here are some tips for using a sunless tanning lotion.
  • Ask your store attendant for the best sunless tanning lotion. Cheap versions may cause your skin to go yellow.
  • Do a skin patch test before applying the lotion to your entire body.
  • Exfoliate before using the lotion.
  • Moisturize your skin.
  • Wear the same thing every time you use the lotion - preferably something dark so that stains will not show.

TANNING BEDS OR LAMPS

Here are some tips for using tanning beds or lamps.
  • Protect your eyes and your lips.
  • Check with your doctor about the effect of UV light on any medication.
  • Moisturize your skin before and after the session.
  • Gradually expose the areas that have been covered up.
  • Don't over do it and watch the time.

Lotions for Skin Care

  • Mood: awesome
A number of breakthrough lotions formulas are being released in the market. There are different variants of bath lotion for dry skin, oily skin, and normal skin. There is also what's is called milk bath skin lotion

That every one can use to maximize that nourishing effect. Choosing the right lotion for your skin is essential to ensure that perfect glow. Just know your skin type and match it with the lotion you are to buy. You can never go wrong with that.

The Different Types of Lotions Available for the Skin

Bath lotion

Bath lotions are the ones that are supposed to use right after you took a shower. This is the type of lotion you need to apply if you stayed in the tub too long that wrinkles are showing in your fingers and toes. These lotions replace the essential oils that are normally washed off every time you take a bath. Plus, it also helps in maintaining the skin's moisture. This is exactly how a bath lotion for dry skin works.

Milk Bath

Milk baths are formulas that are supposed to be added to your regular tub of water during baths. You are supposed to soak in it for a while so that your skin absorbs the goodness that milk can bring. Milk bath is made popular by Cleopatra, the Egyptian princess who became famous for her beautiful skin.

Body Lotion

Body lotions are ones you are supposed to put all over your body, for that instant moisturized effect. Most body lotions come in different scents and colors to fit your mood. It may also come with sunscreen and ultraviolet rays protection.

Baby Lotion

Baby lotions are tested inside dermatological laboratories and are deemed to be suitable for delicate skin such as the baby's. This type of lotion is usually organic and does not contain harsh chemicals and fragrances that could irritate sensitive skin.

Hand lotion

Because the hand is the body part the usually moves and does all the work, it is very prone to dryness and dehydration. Hand lotions provide instant relief for the hands because the skin absorbs this type of lotion easily. This is a very basic lotion skin care regimen that your body requires.

Hair removal

Hair removal is a crucial part of a beauty routine for many of us, especially leading up to and during the summer months. There are now plenty of simple and painless ways to get rid of the unwanted hair on your legs, around your bikini area, under your arms and on your face. In fact, it's never been easier to become an all-over smoothie.

     Waxing

The fastest growing hair removal method, leg and bikini-line waxing can be done at home or in the salon. Warm wax is applied to the area before being stripped off a few minutes later, when it literally rips out each hair by its root. For wax beginners, it's best to have the initial first treatment at the salon to pick up tips and techniques. Results are good - waxing can leave skin feeling smooth and hair-free for up to a month, although thicker hair can start to appear in about three weeks. One drawback is you have to wait for half an inch of re-growth before wax can be applied again.

Depilatory creams

Easy to use, depilatory creams can be applied to the legs, underarm, bikini area or face (look for specific, gentle formulations for the face and roll-ons for the underarm). They work by penetrating the hair shaft, dissolving connective tissues and breaking down the cellular material that glues the dead cells together. As a result, when you remove the hair after about five to 10 minutes, it's easily pulled away from the follicle without the 'ouch' factor. Always do a patch test first to check that you aren't allergic to ingredients in the cream.

Shaving

One of the quickest, easiest and cheapest methods, shaving is the most popular way to remove hair. Contrary to popular belief, shaving does not cause hair to grow coarser or darker - what happens is the new hair emerges with a blunt, rather than a tapered end, and so looks and feels coarser. For best results, shave in the bath or shower once skin has been softened by warm water. Work a shaving gel or foam into a rich lather, use a clean, sharp blade, changing it every five to six shaves and choose a woman's razor that is shaped to fit your curves. Results are temporary: bristles can be felt within two days of shaving.

Sugaring

Popular in North Africa and the Middle East, sugaring has won over women in the west because its results are said to last longer than waxing. Advocates also say that it is less painful than waxing and the cotton sugaring strips can be handwashed and used over and over again. Easy to use, simply warm the sugaring mixture in a basin of hot water until it's thin enough to spread. Apply in the direction of hair growth, cover with cotton strips and pull the strips against the direction of hair growth. Results should stay hair free for several weeks. Always do a patch test first to check that your skin doesn't react to the sugaring mixture.

Getting rid of facial hair

Electrolysis and bleaching are the two main ways you can quickly remove or disguise facial hair. Electrolysis involves inserting a very fine needle into the hair follicle and applying an electrical charge to the papilla (the bud of hair at the base of the follicle where most growth takes place), effectively killing it so that the hair falls out. Each hair must be treated individually and treatment takes place over several visits to a salon. Results give almost permanent hair removal and work successfully on small areas such as the upper lip and chin. Bleaching, ideal for fine, downy hair on the face, does not whip hair away, but disguises it. Results last for between two and four weeks.

Laser hair removal

A revolutionary new treatment that is clinic or salon based literally de-activates your hair follicle by laser or broad spectrum light, causing each individual hair to fall out. After several treatments, entire areas of your body, such as your face, calves and underarms, can become totally and permanently hair-free.

Summer Beauty Secrets

  • Mood: ;)
Uncovered by Celebrity Makeup Artists

Getting ready for summer involves more than just spending hours on the elliptical machine. To look your best, you also need to sweatproof your beauty routine. Even though the warmer temps and the sun can make you feel great, they can also wreak havoc on your skin and hair (wrinkles, skin—you name it). And does anyone need the raccoon eyes that show up when their makeup melts on a humid afternoon? In order to help you adjust to the sunshine, we've asked beauty experts (who've worked with everyone from Madonna to Halle Berry to Fergie) to share their secrets on how they keep their celebrity clients looking fresh in the summer heat.

Protect the Face

Much of the time, the flakiness you battle in the winter turns into oiliness during the warmer months. That's why experts like Chantal Moore, a Los Angeles-based makeup artist whose clients include Faith Hill and Kristen Bell, recommend only the basics. "I don't suggest anything heavy in the summer to clients—it's mainly about protection," says Moore. As a double-duty fix with simple coverage, she uses Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20.

Protect the Lips

t's important to remember that lips are susceptible to sun damage, says Miami-based dermatologist Heather Woolery. "Skin cancer on the lips has a higher risk of metastasis, so lip protection is essential," explains Dr. Woolery, who recommends wearing Neutrogena's SPF 15 Lip Moisturizer during the day.

Waterproof the Eyes

Keeping any makeup on in humidity can be a challenge, but experts like Fiona Stiles (who's worked with Madonna and Fergie) say the eyes are most important. "Waterproof eye makeup is a must," says Stiles, who recommends Bobbi Brown's Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. "It's a good idea to ensure that the makeup you put on in the morning stays where it's supposed to be until dinnertime."

10 small steps for a longer life

  • Mood: stress

Here with the help of leading experts, Good Health offers a guide to the ten easy steps that really will make a difference to your life:

ONE: FLOSS

Flossing at least twice a day is essential to prevent decay says Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation.

Too few people floss, putting themselves at risk of life-threatening diseases such as mouth cancer and heart disease.

But choose proper dental floss - according to a recent national dental survey, more than 60 per cent of Britons use screwdrivers, scissors and earrings to remove food from between their teeth.

TWO: HAVE YOUR EYES TESTED

'A thorough eye test is a health check that can detect underlying conditions that leave you predisposed to sight loss,' says Ciara Smith, at the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

'Around 1.9million people with diabetes aren't having the regular eye tests they need, while 250,000 people with early-stage glaucoma are at risk of losing their sight but don't realise it.'

So get your eyes tested at least every two years.

THREE: EAT 'GOOD' BACTERIA

'Good' bacteria - or probiotics - are essential for our digestive health and helping the immune system to work.

In certain circumstances, for example prolonged use of antibiotics or a severe bout of vomiting or diarrhoea, the gut is stripped of its good bacteria. One of the best sources of probiotics is natural yoghurt.

You can buy other products which say they include probiotics, although some contain only one of two strains of good bacteria rather than the hundreds needed. A good health food store will advise you.

FOUR: TAKE A CHOLESTEROL TEST

Coronary heart disease is the biggest killer in the Western world. In the UK it accounts for one in four of all male and one in six of all female deaths.

Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation (BHF), says everyone over 40 should know their cholesterol level and then aim to reduce it.

'You can't have too low a cholesterol level,' he adds. 'In the UK we regard 5.5 as an average reading, although in other countries, such as China, this is considered very high - and they have a low rate of heart disease compared to us.'

Ask your GP or practice nurse for a simple blood test. Or you can buy a cholesterol test over the chemist's counter, but make sure you choose one with separate readings for good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels: if the results show a high reading, see your GP.

FIVE: STOP SLOUCHING

Better posture is the single most effective weapon against chronic back problems, says Matt Todman, consultant physiotherapist at the Sports & Spinal Clinic in Harley Street.

He recommends taking up Pilates if you are prone to the problem, but simply stopping your slouch habit at your desk and not lugging around heavy bags can make a huge difference.

SIX: SWITCH TO UNSALTED BUTTER

The recommended amount of salt per day is 6g, but most of us routinely consume around 9g. Cutting your salt intake by one teaspoon a day can halve your risk of coronary heart disease, the UK's biggest killer.

Check food labels. Choose those with low salt or sodium content - 0.25g of salt per 100g of food, or 0.1g sodium per 100g. Just switching to unsalted butter, for instance, could make a difference in the long term - or remove the salt cellar from the table.

SEVEN: EAT A CAN OF SARDINES A WEEK

Omega 3 fatty acids in oily fish (such as sardines, tuna and herring) play an important part in the development of the central nervous system - and in countering a range of conditions including heart disease and Alzheimer's.

The Food Standards Agency says we should each try to eat two portions of fish a week, one of them oily.

EIGHT: REDUCE YOUR WAISTLINE

A recent study found that people who had the biggest tummies were 40 per cent more likely to suffer from a heart attack, and that the waistline was a better indication of health than your Body Mass Index.

Women should have a waistline of less than 31.5 inches and men 37 inches. The simplest way is to lose weight overall, and the BHF recommends aiming for a loss of just 2lb a week over the long term.

NINE: SQUEEZE YOUR PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES

One in three women in the UK suffers from urinary incontinence - but the embarrassing nature of the problem means many never see a doctor.

'Urinary incontinence can disrupt a person's social life and thousands become clinically depressed because of it,' says Dr Sarah Jarvis, women's health spokesperson for the Royal College of GPs.

Doing regular pelvic floor exercises improves bladder control. First, squeeze your pelvic floor muscles as if you were trying to hold back urine. Then tighten these muscles and hold for a few seconds. Repeat this ten times, and do the whole exercise at least four times a day.

If you suffer from incontinence, ask your GP to refer you to a specialist nurse. For more advice, call 0870 770 3246 or visit www.incontact.org.

TEN: STOP MAKING PLANS

'Live in the moment,' says psychotherapist Derek Draper. 'The new year is a time when people reflect on the past and make plans for the future, but if you have too many regrets or set yourself unachievable goals, you'll end up disappointed.'

A review by the U.S. National Academy of Science showed increased 'mindfulness' - the psychological term for living in the moment - led to less stress and boosted the immune system.

Use Natural Solutions to Combat Spider Veins

Even the name sounds ugly. Bluish, purple starbursts of tiny veins tend to creep up on us unnoticed and then surprise us in summer, just as we gear up to show off that new bathing suit.

Spider veins, similar to varicose veins, only smaller and closer to the skin’s surface, appear when blood pools in the smaller veins that lead to the heart. The legs, ankles, and feet are particularly vulnerable as the muscles must work against gravity to pump blood back to the heart. When these pumping valves cease to function properly, the veins swell.

Physicians disagree on the causes of spider veins, but according to David Green, MD, of the Vein Center in Bethesda, Maryland, the most viable explanations point to heredity and pregnancy. “If your parents and grandparents had varicose and spider veins, you’re more likely to have them, too,” he says. Progesterone and estrogen fluctuations can also cause changes to the smooth muscle walls inside the veins, and this can impair valve function.

That makes spider veins sound like a done deal, but according to Andrew L. Rubman, ND, a naturopathic doctor in Southbury, Connecticut, we can improve their appearance. He says they’re usually part of an overall inflammatory condition, which we can address using a holistic approach. “Introducing diet changes and supplements that reduce inflammation can have a beneficial effect on vein dysfunction,” he adds.

Rubman recommends a high-potency antioxidant complex, including vitamins A, C, and E and zinc, as well as a citrus bioflavonoid complex (500 mg, twice daily) with hesperidin, rutin, and diosmin, which will enhance the benefits of the vitamin C. Bioflavonoids’ claim to fame? They strengthen capillary and vein walls. You can also find citrus bioflavonoids in the white flesh beneath the skin of citrus fruit, so make oranges and grapefruit a frequent part of your diet.
Rubman also suggests regular leg-toning exercise. “This supports the tissues surrounding the veins, which helps the valves function properly.” Mick Grady, yoga therapist and instructor at the Himalaya Institute of Healing in Honesburg, Pennsylvania, treats spider veins and other circulatory problems with inverted poses, such as lying on your back with your legs straight up, heels leaning against a wall—a pose even a novice can manage. “This allows the blood to drain from swollen veins and relieves the pressure on stressed valves,” Grady says. Hold the pose for five to 10 minutes while breathing deeply and flexing the feet slowly to tone the calf muscles. (Advanced yogis can do Shoulderstand instead—it works wonders for overall circulation.)

Although there is no magic bullet for spider veins, diet, supplements, and exercise will do them a world of good.
